E-COMMERCE PENETRATION AND ITS EFFECT ON TRADITIONAL RETAIL MARKETS IN INDIA
Abstract
This research paper examines the rapid expansion of e-commerce in India and its multidimensional impact on traditional brick-and-mortar retail markets. As India's digital economy accelerates driven by increasing internet penetration, smartphone adoption, affordable data connectivity, and government-backed digital initiatives e-commerce has emerged as a transformative force reshaping consumer behavior, supply chains, and retail ecosystems. The study analyzes growth trajectories of major e-commerce platforms such as Flipkart, Amazon India, Meesho, and Reliance JioMart, alongside the corresponding disruption experienced by kiranas, local bazaars, mom-and-pop establishments, and organized retail chains. Drawing on secondary data, industry reports, government statistics, and published academic literature, this paper explores sector-wise impact across grocery, apparel, electronics, and pharmaceuticals. It further investigates factors of resilience demonstrated by traditional retailers, including hyperlocal service, trust-based relationships, and credit accessibility. The paper concludes with policy recommendations and a forward looking assessment of the coexistence and hybridization of e-commerce and traditional retail in India's evolving marketplace.
